Did you know that giraffes only have 7 cervical vertebrae. . . just like humans. That’s right. You and I have the same number of cervical vertebrae as a giraffe.
Can you imagine if a giraffe was involved in a car accident?
OUCH! Talk about whiplash.
Having a healthy and well-functioning neck is important for enjoying a high quality of life. You probably don’t think about it but if you can’t turn to look at who’s beside you when you are driving because your neck is stiff that causes two problems.
First, it hurts every time you turn your head which makes you not want to look (big mistake). Second, it’s exhausting to have to do something that your body won’t let you do.
If you have to go through your day having to work around something as necessary and normal as turning your head to do normal LIFE stuff. . . you will be exhausted by the end of your day.
You see, I could go into the anatomy of the neck. For instance, you have 7 cervical bones that surround your spinal cord which gives off 8 pairs of nerves that control your arms and hands. Not to mention two really important pairs of nerves that control your breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and digestion.
I could make a very strong argument that the nerve structures in the neck are the most important part of the neck.
Don’t believe me?
Let’s look at Superman. Christopher Reeves broke his neck in 1995. His bones healed. His nerves did not and so he spent the rest of his life as a quadriplegic and unable to breathe without the assistance of a machine because the nerves that controlled his ability to breath originate in the neck and they were irreparably damaged. May God rest his soul.
Breaking your neck is of course an extreme example of the importance of your cervical spine in terms of having a great quality of life.
But, let me give you another example of the importance of having a healthy cervical spine. A research paper came out several years ago that demonstrated that 8 weeks of chiropractic care that was limited to adjusting the top two bones in the spine (C1 and C2) reduced blood pressure in the subjects with high blood pressure an amount equal to taking two blood pressure medications.
You might want to read that again because it’s a little hard to believe.
Is chiropractic a treatment for someone with high blood pressure? Maybe yes . . . maybe no.
The truth is it depends on whether having a chiropractic subluxation is the cause of your high blood pressure.
So here is the deal. Whether we are talking about trouble turning your head, experiencing neck pain or high blood pressure, making sure that your cervical spine is functioning properly is paramount to experiencing vitality and a great quality of life.
A chiropractor is most qualified to analyze your spine and make corrections to it when necessary.
