Of Spinal Discs and Jelly Donuts

Everyone these days wants to talk about discs. Disc bulges. Disc herniations. Disc protrusions. Disc. Disc. Disc. Isn’t MRI wonderful.

Let’s talk about the spinal disc.

The spinal disc is kinda like a jelly donut. It has a jelly like substance (nucleus pulposis) on the inside and is surrounded by bone on the top and bottom and a tough ligament (annulus fibrosis) all around the edge. It’s is common for people to say that they have a slipped disc. Technically, a disc cannot slip. It can bulge, herniate, and prolapse. . . but not slip.

When someone says that they have a slipped disc, in reality what they have is an irritated disc. When a disc gets irritated, like any other soft tissue, it swells and becomes painful. Because of the close proximity of the spinal cord and spinal nerves, this swelling can cause some pretty nasty symptoms.

If you can imagine stepping on one edge of a jelly donut, what happens? The jelly squirts to the opposite side of the doughnut. If you step hard enough or long enough on the doughnut, the jelly will squirt out of the doughnut. Your disc is similar.

When you maintain poor posture over a long time, the jelly part of your disc gets squished to one side and starts to bulge out and put abnormal pressure on one side of your disc. From here it’s not a long trip to pain and irritation.

With appropriate chiropractic care, spinal distortions which result from poor postural habits can be reduced and often times even reversed just like taking your foot off of the doughnut. This eases the pressure on the disc thus reducing your pain and reducing the risk of your disc tearing and squirting the jelly out, which by the way generally requires surgery.

At Thrive Chiropractic, we specialize in providing chiropractic adjustments to your spine, thus removing your foot from the doughnut.
