How does chiropractic work?
This is a great question and there are several theories. We know that the main effect of chiropractic is on the nervous system.
You see the nervous system controls every cell, tissue and organ system in the body.
The brain, which sits comfortably inside of your cranium, has a tail which hangs down and lives inside of your spine. The tail is called the spinal cord and it gives off branches of nerves called nerve roots. These nerve roots exit the spine through holes in your spine and branch into smaller and smaller nerves until every organ and tissue in your body is supplied with a nerve.
The spinal cord and nerves work as a conduit for information to flow from various tissues and organs to the brain and from the brain to various all of the organs and tissues.
Your brain is like a small yet very powerful supercomputer which has the ability to take in huge amounts of information from the body and make decisions about the status of your body.
Are you in danger? Are you in a safe environment? Do you have bacteria and viruses that need to be gotten rid of? Does your heart need to beat faster to supply your leg muscles with more oxygen because you are running or can it slow your heart down and conserve energy because you are sleeping?
These and billions of other calculations are going on in the subconscious of your brain every second of every hour of every day of your entire life.
When your body is in a state of ease or balance, your brain makes good decisions and communicates those decisions clearly to the rest of the body and then your body functions well AND you experience great health.
The many joints of the spine contain very powerful motion and position sensors which send information to the brain that tells the brain what is going on in respect to the spine.
If, for one of many reasons, the spine loses its normal range of motion and proper positioning in respect to adjacent spinal bones, then the sensors in the spine communicate to the brain that there is a problem and the brain goes into something called sympathetic dominance or more commonly “fight or flight.”
Although the body is designed to have short bursts of fight or flight, it is not designed for long periods of it.
When your body experiences chronic fight or flight mode, you get out of balance and health maladies ensue.
Chiropractic works by realigning your spinal bones and restoring normal motion so that the brain starts to get the message that things are good. When the brain thinks that things are good, it switches you out of fight or flight mode which allows your brain to restore balance in your body.
So how does chiropractic work?
Chiropractic works by restoring balance to your body, so that your body (the greatest doctor ever) can restore your body to great health.
That is the only thing that chiropractic can do and it is a beautiful thing to observe.
