Help... I'm Overwhelmed in the Supplement Aisle!
So... Have you ever taken a walk through the supplement section at your local health food store and been completely overwhelmed? How about watching an ad on TV or social media and thinking "I need to be taking that!". Then, you take the supplement and think to yourself "Do I really this. Is it working?". If you have, you are not alone!
I frequently get clients in my office who have this very same thought. It can be very confusing. At best you are wasting your money. Even worse, you are missing something you need or taking too much of something that can actually cause you harm (yes, you can take too many vitamins!)
So, What do you do?! First take a deep breath and realize you are not alone. Then, consider that there are tests of all different kinds available to help you connect with YOUR perfect regime. Many of these tests are not offered to you by your primary care physician. You have to ask for them. Some will be ordered and might even be covered by insurance, some will not. I work with these kind of tests all the time. These tests involve two types of data
1) Data about your genetics - This is the emerging science of epigenetics and is very cool and cutting edge. It gives you a blue print of what your body does well and might be compromised at (for example, handling blood pressure, manufacturing vitamin d, weight management, just to name a few). Then, based on your genetic weaknesses, custom supplements can be created to fill in the gaps. This is a phenomenol new technology. You can watch a short video here to learn more. Just click the "Watch video" button.
2) You can get a snapshot of exactly where you are now. My very favorite test for this is the NutrEval test by Genova labs. Here is a link to that sample report to show you what it measures. Of course, the best test is the one you need depending on what you have going on, but that will give you an idea of what is out there.
